Copper is a conductor. Lead is a shield. Everything either metal does in this practice follows from that one physical difference, and the difference is used rather than illustrated.
Copper is employed for the gathering of energies, since this metal is a great conductor — and the drill built on it takes energy out of a room and puts it into a wizard's sphere.1 Lead is the metal of Saturn, and its named working is a plate you make once and carry to procure protection from accidents, dangerous incidents, misfortunes and disasters.2 One collects. The other stops things arriving. And of the two, the collecting one comes with the sharpest ethical warning in the whole curriculum.
The gathering exercise is short and it needs nothing but a disc of metal. Take a round piece of Copper and hold it between the hands. After a couple of minutes, visualize magical energies being drawn from the environment. Then watch where they go: observe as the energies gather and collect themselves upon your head and heart, and from there they flow freely into your Philosophical Sphere, ready to be employed.
Two collection points, head and heart, then transfer to the sphere. That is unusual — most of the charging drills in this system run to a single furnace and out through the right hand. This one has no output at all. It is pure intake, and the store is the sphere itself.
The stated use is amplification: the energy can be employed to empower and augment individual magical operations. So copper is what a practitioner uses when a working needs more behind it than they currently have.
Then the condition, and it is stated in the same breath as the technique rather than as a footnote. This exercise should be performed in a room with no other people and specially no pets or small animals — and the reason is given plainly: to avoid draining other people or animals from their own vital energies. Then the judgement: to wilfully drain someone from their energies is a dark act, and it has immediate terrible consequences.
Read what that admits. The drill pulls energy from the environment, indiscriminately, and a living thing in the room is part of the environment. Copper does not distinguish between ambient energy and the energy in a sleeping cat.
Which makes this the only technique here whose safety measure is an empty room. Everything else that requires solitude requires it for the practitioner's benefit — a quiet place for concentration, no other person's energy pattern interfering with a scrying, no non-magical people to break the working. This one requires solitude for everyone else's protection.
And the word doing the moral work is wilfully. Deliberate draining is a dark act with immediate terrible consequences. Nothing at all is said about accidental draining, which is precisely the case the empty-room rule exists to prevent — so the technique's own failure mode falls outside the sentence that condemns it.
Beyond the drill, copper is Venus, and its working life is entirely social. Because Venus governs Love and Fertility, copper handles Love, Friendships, Relationships and even affairs of the family. It helps find loyal people to accomplish particularly important tasks, find good companionship, make new contacts and meet new people — and the method is one object worn in one place: a Copper ring on the little finger of the right hand.
For growth and making things, the specification is an area rather than a shape. Those who carry a square inch of Copper will be able to come up with fantastic ideas, find their creativity enhanced, and see their works grow faster and come to fruition quicker than expected. And for the outdoors, copper handles Animals and the Forest — it can appease animals and let a practitioner travel through the wilderness without any problems with wildlife or vegetation. That one takes two formulas, Magicartifex Ubertas and Vox Feromineus, and then the copper is worn on a necklace where it is visible.
Visible is the only placement rule of its kind in the metals section. Every other object here is carried in a pocket, worn on a finger, or kept on the left side. This one has to be seen — by the animals, presumably, though that is not said.
Lead is the last metal and it belongs to Saturn: death, the cycles of birth and rebirth, time on a cosmic scale, accidents, and the true Mastery of the Universe. Its first use follows from Saturn being a planet of mastery and trials. Lead is carried to seek Saturn's favor in situations where the Apprentice finds that things are getting out of control, are getting too difficult, are becoming dangerous or altogether perilous and precarious. The piece is blessed with an In Nomine Deux Benedicto incantation and carried.
That is a specific emotional situation rather than a general one — not misfortune, but the point at which a person can feel a situation escaping them. ⚠ And lead carries a warning of its own, in a footnote: Lead should be handled with care, for it tends to be toxic as Mercury. That is accurate. Lead is a cumulative poison, damaging at low chronic exposures, and it is absorbed through handling and ingestion; the caution is quoted here rather than softened.
The protective object is square, and its construction is exact. Find a square piece of Lead, and in each of its four corners inscribe the letters AGLA. In the centre, inscribe the planetary symbol of Saturn. Then bless and enchant it with In Nomine Deux Benedicto and Magicartifex Ubertas.
It protects against accidents, dangerous incidents, misfortunes and disasters. That is the four-quarter structure again, at the size of a pocket object — a square with a name at each corner and something in the middle. The altar is a square with four guardians and the elements at its centre; the crystal ball lies on a cloth with four names around it. Here the four corners take one name, repeated, and the centre takes a planet.
AGLA is the Jewish notarikon that also appears in the consecration rite and in the four tower guardians, so this is the fourth time it turns up. It is the most-reused name in the practical material, and it always occupies a boundary.
The second lead object is round rather than square, and its purpose is inward. Lead was the metal generally used by alchemists in the past to achieve its famous transmutation into Gold — and the claim made is that this was actually done and is still being done by alchemists all over the world. But that is not what an apprentice does with it. For the mean time the Apprentice will employ Lead to accrue a better self and wholesome spiritual personality.
The object: a piece of round Lead, consecrated like the square one. On one side inscribe the magical names AZADIR RVCH CHVR KITVB; on the other, Saturn's planetary symbol. So the two lead objects are a matched pair. Square, cornered with a divine name, for keeping disaster out. Round, inscribed with four coined names, for improving the person carrying it. Lead against the world, and lead against yourself.
