Not a crisis exactly. The stage before that — when a situation is getting out of control, becoming too difficult, turning dangerous or altogether perilous and precarious, and you can feel it sliding.1 The last of the seven metals is the one assigned to that. Lead answers to Saturn, and Saturn in this scheme is not the planet of misfortune so much as the planet of what misfortune belongs to: death, the cycles of birth and rebirth, time on a cosmic scale, accidents, and the true Mastery of the Universe.
Five domains, and four of them are things nobody wants. The fifth is mastery, and it is in the same list on purpose. ⚠ Before anything else on this page: lead is genuinely poisonous. Look at the five together and they share a property. Death, cosmic time, birth-and-rebirth cycles, accidents — every one is something that happens to a person rather than something a person does. And then mastery, sitting at the end of the same list. Saturn is described as a planet of mastery and trials, which pairs the two words and makes the connection explicit: what is mastered is the trial.
So the metal is for the class of situation where nothing you do settles it, and the operation offered is to seek Saturn's favor rather than to change the circumstance. Carry a piece of lead, blessed with In Nomine Deux Benedicto — the general-purpose blessing named elsewhere in the metals chapter — and that is the whole of the first use. Which is a different shape from every other metal here. Tin attracts, copper draws, iron passes over a body. Lead is carried while something difficult happens.
A footnote attaches a caution and it is worth quoting exactly, because it is one of only two health warnings in the metals chapter. However, Lead should be handled with care for it tends to toxic as Mercury.
That is the whole of it, and it is accurate as far as it goes. Lead and mercury are both cumulative poisons and both were handled freely for centuries by people who did not know. ⚠ What the note leaves out matters. Lead poisoning is not an acute event you would notice; it accumulates, and the damage — to the nervous system, to kidneys, to a developing brain — is largely irreversible. The difference is the material — this one is metal, and the metals chapter reasons that a metal adds its planet's power to whatever is written on it.
AGLA is a real and standard formula in the Western magical tradition, a Hebrew acronym used widely across the grimoire literature and turning up in exactly this position — at the corners of a protective figure. Its appearance here at four corners is conventional rather than invented. And the double enchantment is unusual. Most operations in this curriculum take one incantation. This takes two, and the second — Magicartifex Ubertas — is the most-referenced incantation in the whole volume, the general tap on the sphere's own power.
The third operation is the strangest and it is aimed at the practitioner rather than at any situation. Take a piece of round Lead, consecrated the same way as the plate. On one side inscribe the magical names AZADIR RVCH CHVR KITVB. On the other side, Saturn's planetary symbol.
The purpose given: to accrue a better self and wholesome spiritual personality. The four words are glossed in a footnote, one by one, and the glosses turn the string into a sentence of sorts. AZADIR: to march towards the Light. RVCH: Spirit of God. CHVR: Whiteness. KITVB: to be good.

Read those in order and it is the alchemical sequence in four words — the movement toward light, the animating spirit, the albedo whiteness, and the result. Which is the point of the object: this is the transmutation piece, and it is round where the protective one is square. ⚠ RVCH is a real transliteration of the Hebrew ruach, spirit. CHVR corresponds to a root meaning white. The other two are less standard, and the footnote's glosses are reported as printed.
One sentence in the entry is a claim about the world rather than about a procedure, and it is stated without hedging. Lead was the metal generally used by alchemists in the past to achieve its famous transmutation into gold. This was actually done and is still being done by alchemist all over the world.

So metallic transmutation is asserted as fact and then set aside as not-for-now, and what the apprentice gets instead is the round piece with the four Hebrew words. The two are placed in the same paragraph as though one were a lesser version of the other — which is exactly the reading the alchemy discipline gave earlier in the syllabus, where turning lead into gold was called a symbolic reference to immortality worked on mind, spirit and soul.

The metals chapter closes with a formula that applies to all seven, and it explains something the individual entries assume. The formula is given in order to bring the metals into order and to excite them to obey the word of the Lord — used to purify them from evil, noxious and even dark energies which will hamper any magical operation and most possibly bent it into something entirely different.
Bend it into something entirely different. That is the stated failure mode, and it is not that the operation fails. It is that it works and produces the wrong thing.
The formula itself opens EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA METALLUM — the same frame used across this material for exorcising a class of substance, with the substance noun swapped in. And a note alongside promises individual formulas that exorcise each metal particularly, though we shall see those formulas in other texts and not this one.
