Everybody knows the folklore. A silver bullet for the werewolf, a silver blade for the vampire. Almost nobody has been told why it should be silver rather than steel, or gold, or iron — and this is one of the few places that answers the question rather than repeating it.
It is popular knowledge that silver weapons can defeat both vampires and werewolves, and the reason given is that silver is infused with two different, but very potent, attributes of the Moon.1 Two attributes, two separate arguments, and they work in opposite directions on the same creature.
The first argument is about rank rather than force. The Moon holds the energy that keeps the rest of the planets in place. That is called a mystery to be studied later, and what is offered now is a summary: through the form of the Moon the rest of the magical planets come into being. The Moon is the coagulating agent for all of them, and they are all fashioned after her — with a piece of evidence attached that a reader can go and check: if not, look at their symbols and you will see.
Look at the standard planetary glyphs and there is something to that. The crescent turns up in Mercury's symbol, in Jupiter's, in Saturn's — a curve sitting above, beside or below a cross or a circle. Whether that is derivation or shared draughtsmanship is not argued; the invitation is simply to look.
So silver acquires this sovereign quality, and the effect on the undead is described as retreat rather than injury: it irradiates the surrounding with its awesome presence, making evil creatures and fiends back away from its blessed light. Not a wound. A rank they will not stand in front of.
The second argument is a straight opposition of properties. The Moon is a planet of fertility, order and growth, and is therefore considered to be a giver of life. Silver, carrying that, represents Life and Order — which is contrary to the creatures of evil. And here the verb changes: silver hampers and utterly destroys their negative and deadly energies with such potent emanations of Life.
Put the two reasons side by side and they are doing different jobs. The first makes fiends back away; the second destroys what they are made of. The folklore keeps only the second, which is why the bullet gets remembered and the presence does not.
There is a general lesson in it about how this system argues. Silver is not effective against the undead because a story says so. It is effective because the Moon is the coagulating principle of the planets and the giver of life, and the undead are the one category that is neither ordered nor alive.
The health working is the most specified object in the metals section, and it cannot be bought.
The Apprentice and Wizard should carry a silver coin, with an eagle in one side and a caduceus on the other. And then: this coin should be commissioned upon a silver worker.
Made to order. Not found, not adapted, not a coin from a shop with the right image on it — struck for you by a person who works silver. That requirement appears nowhere else in the practical material, and it puts a craftsman into a curriculum otherwise written for someone working alone.
The enchantment has three parts and one of them is a calendar entry. Once crafted, the coin is enchanted with a Magicartifex Ubertas Incantation and a Saluber Statum Incantation — and the timing is exact: on a Wednesday, on the Eighth Hour. Wednesday is Mercury's day and Mercury's number is eight, so the day and the hour are the same planet twice. The coin is silver, which is the Moon; the images are an eagle and a caduceus; and the enchantment happens in Mercury's window. Caduceus and Mercury go together, so the moment matches the emblem rather than the metal.
This coin should be kept always on the left side of the Wizard. Left, permanently — the same side the Nihilus ring is worn on, and the same side that must never approach the altar. The one thing the coin is for is keeping the body free from infirmities, which is a subtraction: illness taken away rather than health added.
The general protective object is simpler and it has a number in it.
Carry a piece of silver in the form of a holy symbol, thrice blessed by the In Nomine Deux Benedicto Incantation.
Three blessings, not one. Nothing states why three, and it is the only object in the metals section given a repetition count. Three, in this system's own numbering, is the number of synthesis, animation and the divine trinity — and the number a wizard traces over a stalled thing to get it moving.
What the object covers is broad: protection against witchcraft, evil creatures, and keeping the body fit and healthy, plus getting rid of negative energies and entities.
Three objects in this practice are assigned to the left, and they make a set worth noticing. The silver coin is kept always on the left side of the Wizard. The ruby ring, carrying the Nihilus force, goes on the left hand. And the left is the side from which a wizard must never approach the altar.
Read the three together and the left is consistently the subtracting side. Nihilus takes away; the coin's job is keeping the body free from illness, which is removal rather than addition; and the altar prohibition guards the one place where nothing should be taken. The handedness is not decoration — it is the same distinction the eight verbs are built on, worn on a body.

Its stated job is keeping the body free from illness.
And keep the reasoning in view while you carry either one. Silver is not a charm here. It is the Moon's metal, and the Moon is both the coagulating agent that the other planets are fashioned after and the giver of life — which is why the two things it works against are precisely the disordered and the undead.

Both are given as the explanation for the same folklore. And they prescribe different objects: a presence needs only to be worn, while a destroyer wants to be a weapon — which is exactly the form the folklore remembers and this section never actually recommends.
Battery-as-Amulet — Operational Analogy — Both traditions carry a small object on the body for protection, and both insist the object is doing real work rather than reminding its owner of something. Neither treats a charm as a token.
The Akan explanation is a battery. You charge it ritually, it holds the charge, and while it holds it, it can power something — so protection is a quantity with a level, and the practitioner's job is to keep it topped up.
Here the protection is a property of the substance, and neither corpus notices what that trades away. Silver works because the Moon is the coagulating principle of the planets and the giver of life; the three blessings are added on top of a metal that was already effective. A property cannot run down — and cannot be checked either. The battery model gives a practitioner something to maintain and a reason to expect failure after neglect.
