Read the exorcisms one at a time and each looks like an ancient formula for its own substance. Read them together and they are one sentence with a hole in it. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA METALLUM. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA LAPIDARIA. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA OLEUM. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA FORMATA NUMERALIS. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA GEOMETRICA FORMATA. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA ARCANA DIVINATA.1
Same six words, then the substance. I therefore exorcise you, creature — and then metal, or stone, or oil, or numerical form, or geometric form, or divined arcana. The formula is a template with a slot.
Counted directly against the converted file rather than taken on trust. EXORCISO appears thirteen times. Of those, eleven use the frame — eight spelled CREATURA and three spelled CREATURE, which is a variant rather than a different construction.
The substance nouns filling the slot are: METALLUM (metal), LAPIDARIA (stone), LAPIDA VATICA, OLEUM (oil, twice), HERBARIA NATURALIA (natural herbs), TERRAM (earth), IGNIS (fire), FORMATA NUMERALIS (numerical form), GEOMETRICA FORMATA (geometric form), and ARCANA DIVINATA (divined arcana). Ten distinct substances across eleven framed instances. Two further EXORCISO uses do not take the frame.
⚠ This count is of what is legible in this edition's conversion, and it corrects a higher figure carried in this build's own working notes. Reported as counted.
The pattern is not a stylistic observation. It changes what these formulas are. A fixed inherited text cannot be extended. If the exorcism of metals came down from a tradition, then a wizard confronting a substance the tradition never named has no formula — and would have to find one, be given one, or do without.
A template can be extended by anybody who sees the slot. Exorciso igitur te creatura plus a Latin noun produces a working formula for anything you can name. Which is presumably how the list grew to cover metals, stones, oils, herbs, earth, fire, numerical forms, geometric forms and a deck of cards.
And that is not a criticism. It is a description of a productive system, and it is the same thing the casting syntax does with school words, incantations and magic words. This material's real technology is not its formulas. It is the frames the formulas are built on — and a practitioner who has understood the frame has understood more than one who has memorised eleven exorcisms.
The strongest evidence that these are templates is a mistake, and it sits in the gemstone enchantment procedure. The formula said with both hands over a stone asks that magical power be set SUPER IS CALIX — upon this chalice. In a procedure for enchanting a gemstone.
Calix is a cup. It belongs to the chalice material and nowhere near a stone, and the only explanation that fits is that the frame was reused and the substance word was not swapped.
⚠ Reported as printed; re-check the plate. A leftover value in a variable slot is what a template looks like when somebody forgets to fill it in.
The exorcism frame is the largest, and it is not the only one. Four other constructions repeat the same way, each with its own fixed part and its own variable. The four elemental conjurations share a frame across their four elements.
The Guardians of the Towers run one sentence four times: a name, a Latin direction, a Latin element. VARJA … SEPTENTRIONES. ARMATI … ORIENTIS. AMURDAAD … AUSTRALIS. HAURVATAT … OCCIDENS. The Phoenician Star runs one sentence eight times: ERIGO SUPER RADIUS LUMINUS SEPUTUS NOS IN VESTRI LUCIS DEUS — then VALIDOSUS, SUPREMUS, ABSOLUTUS, PRODIGIOSUS, LUMINARIUS, EXTREMUS, OPTIMUS, PIUS SANTISSIMUS.
The base-oil consecration runs one sentence four times: IERO LAIOS — then KATHAGIAS, MYSTIKO, THEIOSTES, PHOTEINOS. And the seven-pointed star runs one sentence four times: a divine name, a direction, an element. JEHOVA SEPTENTRIONALIS FLAMEUS.
Five frames, and between them they generate the great majority of the spoken material in the practical chapters. What looks like dozens of distinct formulas is a handful of sentences with their variables changed.
Look at what goes in the slots and the pattern is consistent across all five. Substances, in the exorcism frame — metal, stone, oil, herb, earth, fire.
Directions, in the guardian, star and consecration frames — north, east, south, west, and the eight compass points. Divine epithets, in the Phoenician Star — strong, supreme, absolute, prodigious.
Never verbs, never objects of desire, never outcomes. You cannot fill a slot with prosperity or healing. The variables are always what the operation is aimed at or through, never what it is for — and what it is for is carried by the incantation in the casting sentence instead.
Which means the two systems divide the labour. The frames handle address. The casting syntax handles intent.
A practitioner can act on this directly. Knowing the frame means knowing what to change and what not to. Exorciso igitur te creatura is invariant; the noun is yours. Get the noun wrong and you have exorcised the wrong kind of thing; change the fixed part and you have said something else entirely.
It also explains the material's own instruction about metals — what can never be done is to substitute a metal for another — in a new light. The substance noun in the formula is the address, exactly as the metal is. Saying metallum over a stone is the same error as using tin where copper is called for.
And it makes the material extensible in a way no fixed text is. A wizard facing a substance with no printed exorcism has the frame, a Latin dictionary, and the eleven worked examples showing how a noun goes in. ⚠ Nothing in the range read authorises that extension. It follows from the structure and is offered as a reading.
Four things to do with it. Learn the fixed part first. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA — six words that never change, followed by PER PENTAGRAMMATON ET IN NOMINE TETRAGRAMMATON in most instances.
Match the noun to the substance. Metallum for metal, lapidaria for stone, oleum for oil, herbaria for herbs, terram for earth, ignis for fire, formata numeralis for a number grid, geometrica formata for a solid, arcana divinata for a deck. Check the printed formula against the substance in front of you. The super is calix case shows that even the source can leave the wrong value in a slot.
And recognise the other four frames when you meet them, because they behave the same way: the guardians, the Phoenician Star, the elemental conjurations and the base-oil consecration are all one sentence repeated with one word changed.
The formulas are quoted as printed; the census is this build's own count against the converted file. ⚠ Thirteen EXORCISO instances, eleven of them sharing the frame, ten distinct substance nouns. This corrects a higher figure carried in this build's working notes and is reported as counted rather than as inherited.
⚠ CREATURA and CREATURE both appear — eight and three times respectively. Treated here as a spelling variant of the same word rather than as two constructions. ⚠ SUPER IS CALIX in the gemstone formula is treated as an unswapped slot. That is a reading, not the source's own statement. Re-check the plate.
🚩 The Latin throughout is late and irregular. Exorciso igitur te creatura is a genuine construction from Christian exorcism practice — the Roman Ritual uses exorcizo te, creatura over salt and water — so the frame itself has a real ancestor even where the substances filling it do not. Unresolved: nothing anywhere in the material names the frames, describes them as templates, or authorises a practitioner to construct a new instance.
Follow the origin claim and these formulas are inherited. They were kept secret and hidden away by the Wizards of the Eldest Tradition, handed down generation after generation — which makes each one a received text, to be learned exactly and never altered. Follow the structure and they are generated. Eleven instances of one sentence, ten nouns, and one case where the noun was left over from a different procedure — which is what a template looks like in use, not what a transmitted text looks like.
Both are true of the same words. And they set different obligations: a received text must be preserved, while a template invites a practitioner to make the next one.
Afa, Geomancy, Binary Code — Both traditions get wide coverage out of a small generative core, and in both the core is more informative than any single output it produces. Neither system is really a list, though both look like one.
Afa's core is binary and closed. Sixteen positions, open or closed, pairing into 256 figures — and every possible output already has a name. The generator and the catalogue are the same object, so nothing can be produced that is not already accounted for.
Here the generator is open and the catalogue is partial, which neither corpus notices. Eleven exorcisms exist and the frame would accept any Latin noun, so the printed set is a sample rather than a census. Which means a practitioner using this system can produce a valid-looking formula nobody has ever checked. A closed generator makes every output legitimate by construction; an open one makes legitimacy a question, and this material never raises it.
Sharpest implication. Eleven exorcisms are eleven fillings of one sentence. EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA — then metal, stone, oil, herb, earth, fire, number, solid or card. The formulas are not the technology. The frame is, and one instance still carries the previous slot's value.
Generative questions.
