Go and look at the hallmark inside a ring. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and the rest is usually copper. Nine-carat gold is 37.5% gold. Almost nothing sold as a metal is only that metal, and a reader who has followed the last several pages of correspondences might reasonably conclude their jewellery is useless.
It is not, and the rule that says so is short. And they operate in both directions at once: their substances resonate with the four elementary constituents of water, earth, air and fire and simultaneously with the higher vibrations of the heavenly spheres — so they become powerful channels and containers of both energies, charging and projecting them in a harmonious combination, as no other element is capable of achieving, save the elements themselves.
A metal is therefore a coupling between two levels. It reaches down into the elements and up into the spheres, and holds the connection open. Follow that and the purity rule makes sense. A channel connects two named endpoints. Adding copper to silver does not change which planet is at the top of the line — it puts a little more copper in the wire. Swapping silver for tin changes the endpoint, which means you have opened a line to Jupiter while performing a working addressed to the Moon.
And a wrong endpoint is not a weak signal. It is a correct signal delivered to the wrong place, which is why the phrase used is directly into trouble rather than will not work.

Every one of those names the symptom. This one names nothing. Which leaves a practitioner unable to recognise the fault after committing it — there is no described experience to match against, so a working that goes wrong for any reason and a working that went wrong because you used brass are indistinguishable from inside.
The rule is therefore enforceable only in advance. You obey it before the fact or you never find out.
The boundary is not drawn, and the practical cases are genuinely unclear. Alloys are explicitly fine — sterling silver, nine-carat gold, brass and bronze are all mixtures and all pass, provided the main ingredient is the one the working names.
But brass is copper and zinc, and bronze is copper and tin. Is a bronze object a copper object with tin in it, or is tin now present where it was not called for? On the stated rule the main ingredient is copper, so bronze should be acceptable. Nothing says so.
