Second Level Protections: Guardos

Four Things That Can Get At You

The first-level protections build boundaries — a circle, six walls, a companion, a binding. The second level stops naming boundaries and starts naming what comes through them. A blade. Fear. A thief at the door. And a situation that slowly closes around a person until nothing moves.1

Four threats, four charms, and each one is answered at a different layer: the skin, the heart, the property line, and the shape of a life.

Accies Patronum — Hardened Skin

The first is the most physical incantation in the spellbook and it states exactly what it does to a body. What it stops: sharp objects, swords, puncture wounds and slashes from metallic objects which would otherwise open the recipient's skin into a formidable gash.

The mechanism: the incantation works by magically strengthening the surface of the skin of the recipient and toughening its resistance against sharp objects. The skin's surface, made tougher. Not a barrier in the air — a change in the person.

Then a second effect that is about movement rather than resistance: the charm helps the recipient to be formidable in combat and to be able to avoid slashes and attacks that would otherwise harm him/her. Avoid. So the protection has two halves — you are harder to cut, and you are better at not being where the cut lands.

And a third covers the magical case: it will also protect from dark magics which seek to cut, slash or harm with metal. ⚠ This is one of very few workings in the volume aimed at physical combat, and the Praetor trade — the one that trains in combat styles explicitly not to fight physically — is the obvious user. The two are never connected.

Psalm 66:2. Celestial: Gaushel, Throne of the Third Heaven, who protects against attacks and slashes from metallic objects or weapons.

Analytical Case Study — Coram Entimoris Hides the Heart

The fear charm has the most unusual mechanism in the protection school, and it is not what a reader would expect. The obvious design for an anti-fear charm is courage — add resolve, and the person stands firm. This is not that.

What it covers: fear, horror, fright and panic, especially during combat, stressful situations, or when dealing with dark and monstrous enemies. It also frees someone accursed with these emotions and relieves them from such incapacitating feelings, enabling them to act with firmness and resolution. Then the mechanism: the incantation works by covering the recipient's heart from the mystic senses of spiritual creatures, so that they can't affect the person emotionally.

Covering the heart from their senses. Take that apart and it relocates the whole problem. The fear is not treated as something inside the person that needs stiffening. It is treated as something a creature is doing to them — and the charm works by making the target unreadable rather than by making them brave.

Which explains the last effect, and it follows directly: the incantation will eradicate fearful monsters from the vicinity of the recipient and will dissipate fearful creatures like ghosts and malevolent spirits. If a creature frightens people by sensing them, then a person it cannot sense is a person it has no purchase on — and something with no purchase leaves. The monsters are not driven off. They lose the thing they were holding.

⚠ And note what that implies about the ordinary case. On this account, a great deal of fear in the presence of such beings is not a reaction to them but an operation performed by them, and the charm is a counter-operation rather than a mood. Psalm 100:6. Celestial: Arluanel, Cherub of the Second Heaven, who hides our presence from dangerous and monstrous creatures.

Dominus Asservo — Salt and Frankincense, Renewed Monthly

The third is a house guard and it is the only working in the protection school with a maintenance schedule. What it produces: the wizard employs the forces of Heaven to create a powerful barrier for a house against thieves, robbers, malicious and evil people.

The mechanism is staffing rather than walling: the incantation places mighty guardians which protect the house and will prevent the place from being robbed. They also scare away people who have evil intentions, like stealing goods and valuables. Guardians placed, and people scared off — which means the protection acts on the would-be thief rather than on the door.

Scope is wider than a building: the charm can also be placed in a vehicle, ship or any other piece of property to receive the same kind of protection. Then the procedure. For it to be effective, the Wizard must trace a magic circle around the place or object using a mix of salt and frankincense.

Two materials mixed, where the first-level circle takes salt or sand alone. And then the schedule: this must be done at least once a month to procure the place is kept protected. Monthly, indefinitely. The only standing renewal in the school, and it is the charm protecting the thing a person actually lives in.

Psalm 139:9. Celestial: Arkaqon, Throne of the First Heaven, who rules over the protection against thieves and robbery.

Lutum Patronum — Against Being Slowly Stuck

The fourth protects against a situation rather than an attacker, and the situation is described with unusual care. What it prevents: situations which normally sink people into misfortune, problems and difficulties. And more specifically, it prevents the recipient from falling into slow paced events, which will eventually dissipate into nothingness.

Slow paced events that dissipate into nothingness. That is not a disaster — it is the thing that goes on quietly for two years and then turns out to have gone nowhere. The charm works both before and after. It prevents the falling in, and it helps the recipient to get out of these events, giving the strength and impulse to move faster and farther away from stagnant events or situations.

And it names the feeling as well as the fact: it brings relief from sensations of being stuck in the same place. Then one more target, which does not obviously belong with the rest: it will protect against traps set out by the enemy and the unfair persons which want to take advantage of the recipient.

⚠ So a charm against stagnation is also a charm against deliberate entrapment, in the same sentence — which puts a laid trap and a slowly closing situation in the same category. The connection is not stated and the effect is the same either way: a person who cannot move. Psalm 39:3. Celestial: Samuanel, Throne of the Third Heaven, who protects against finding oneself stuck to an undesirable situation.

Three Thrones, and What That Suggests

The rank distribution in this school is unlike anything else in the spellbook and it is worth setting out. Three of the four beings are Thrones — Gaushel, Arkaqon and Samuanel. The fourth, Arluanel, is a Cherub.

Elsewhere in the spellbook a Throne turns up occasionally and the ranks are mixed. Here they dominate, and the pattern the earlier invocation set suggested holds: a Throne is a being that maintains a standing condition rather than performing an act. Which fits protections exactly. Hardened skin, a guarded house and a life kept from silting up are all conditions that have to persist. Only the fear charm is an intervention in a moment, and that is the one held by a Cherub.

⚠ The Heavens run Third, Second, First, Third — no ordering, and again no relation between rank and Heaven.

What Each Charm Actually Touches

Read the four mechanisms side by side and they operate at four different layers, which is the school's real design. The skin — toughened at the surface, plus better avoidance. The heart — hidden from the senses of creatures that would use it. The property line — a circle of salt and frankincense, renewed monthly, with guardians inside it. The shape of a situation — slow events prevented, stagnation escaped, traps avoided.

Body, emotion, property, circumstance. Nothing in the set overlaps, and none of the four is a wall in the way the first level's charms are. ⚠ Which makes the second level of this school the more sophisticated one by a clear margin. First-level protection stops a thing from arriving. Second-level protection removes what the thing was going to work with — the openable skin, the readable heart, the unwatched door, the situation with no exit.

Implementation Workflow — Working the Second Protections

Against blades and anything metal, including magical attacks aimed with metal: Accies Patronum. Expect harder skin and better avoidance together. Against fear — your own or somebody else's, and particularly in the presence of monstrous beings: Coram Entimoris. It hides the heart rather than adding courage, and the creatures leave because they lose their grip.

For a house, a vehicle, a ship or any property: Dominus Asservo. Trace the circle in a mix of salt and frankincense, and redo it at least once a month or the protection lapses. Against a situation that is slowly closing — or one somebody laid for you: Lutum Patronum. It works to keep you out and to get you out, and it addresses the sensation as well as the circumstance.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The four incantations, their mechanisms, psalms and celestials are all in the Second Level Protections section of the spellbook. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.

⚠ Accies Patronum is a combat protection in a curriculum whose one martial trade explicitly trains not to fight them physically. Neither passage refers to the other. ⚠ Coram Entimoris treats fear in the presence of spiritual creatures as something those creatures do rather than something the person feels. The claim is stated as a mechanism and is not developed anywhere else.

⚠ Dominus Asservo shares its psalm-and-circle shape with the first-level Aegis charm but takes a different material mix — salt and frankincense rather than salt or sand — and nothing explains the change. Unresolved: the house guard must be renewed monthly, and nothing states what happens in the gap if a renewal is missed, or whether the guardians leave or simply stop.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow the fear charm and this school works by concealment. The heart is covered from the senses of spiritual creatures, the person becomes unreadable, and the monsters disperse because there is nothing left to take hold of. Follow the house charm and the same school works by display. Mighty guardians are placed, and people with evil intentions are scared away — which requires them to notice something is there.

Both are in the same four. One protection works because nothing can find you; the other works because everything can.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Zero handshakes on this page. The material is four printed formulas with their mechanisms, texts and celestials, and the connection that would earn its place — the salt circle and what voids it — is carried inside this build by the page that treats the first-level protections directly.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The anti-fear charm does not make anybody brave. It works by covering the recipient's heart from the mystic senses of spiritual creatures, so that they can't affect the person emotionally — which treats the fear as something being done to you rather than something you are feeling, and disperses the creatures by taking away what they were holding.

Generative questions.

  • If fear near such beings is an operation they perform, how much ordinary dread is this system claiming has a source?
  • Three of four beings here are Thrones. Is a Throne this material's rank for a standing condition rather than an act?
  • The house circle takes salt and frankincense where the room circle takes salt or sand. What does the frankincense add?
