Every incantation in the spellbook carries a magical level, and a beginner will read that as a difficulty rating. It is not. It is a measure of how much power the sphere has to put out — and where that power comes from is the surprise.
The Magical levels refer to the amount of magic the Wizard needs to properly perform the given operation, and the higher level an incantation is, the more power the Philosophical Sphere should exert.1 Then the sentence that changes the whole picture: this power, aside from the Cosmological and Cosmogonic constructs, comes from the various magical assistances the Wizard has acquired through time. Not from talent, and not from practice hours. From assistances — and the assistances are beings.
The helpers are named and they arrive in a fixed order. These magical assistances come from the aid of the Familiar Spirits, the Angels and the Magical Elementals the Wizard has managed to conjure up and to keep at his or her side. Note and to keep. Conjuring one is not the same as having one. The phrasing makes retention a separate achievement from acquisition, and nothing in the range read says what keeping one involves.
And what they do is stated: all three help the Wizard in its daily magical activities, by protecting, guarding and providing information as it becomes necessary. Protection, guarding, intelligence. That is a household staff rather than a battery — except that the level system treats them as exactly a battery.
The first kind of ally has a name and an origin, and the origin is the most striking claim here. The Familiar Spirits are powerful entities the Wizard acquires through a series of rituals, focusing on the animal spirits of the magical world. So the raw material is animal spirits, and the acquisition is ritual rather than encounter. Then: they are known as Genuicaveri because they are created with the very life force of the Wizard.
Created with the very life force of the Wizard. Read that against everything else this system says about energy, and it is a large claim. The whole practice runs on transfer rather than generation — Philius draws from the universe at no cost, Neikos takes from you and gives to the world, and nothing is made from nothing. A familiar is the one thing here built out of the practitioner's own substance.
Which makes the assistance economy stranger than it looks. A wizard raises their spell level by acquiring allies, and the first class of ally is made from their own life force. The power to cast higher-level incantations is therefore bought with something of the caster's, and the material never returns to what that costs or whether it is recovered.
The second and third classes have a prerequisite, stated plainly. The angels and elementals are convoked through a series of rituals the Wizard follows after a Familiar Spirit has been acquired and kept.
After. So the sequence is not a matter of preference. You make a familiar out of your own life force first, and only then are the rituals for angels and elementals available.
That has a consequence for the whole curriculum. The conjuration school teaches how to address beings and the Archprimes give the elemental hierarchy its officers — but the ladder of allies, as opposed to contacts, starts with the one thing you have to spend yourself on. Everything above it is gated behind that.
Then the honest limit, and it is the most useful line here for anybody working from this material. At this moment, the Apprentice is in no way prepared to work the necessary conjurations to convoke and keep these assisting goodly spirits. The reason: the energy needed and the rigorous discipline must be accrued with time and experience. And the promise: in the future we shall deal with this.
So the consequence for the spellbook: for now, the magical levels of the incantations will range between the first and second level. Levels one and two. A beginner with no familiar, no angel and no elemental has a sphere powered only by the cosmological and cosmogonic constructs, and that is worth two levels. Everything higher requires beings the curriculum explicitly does not yet teach you to get.

Alongside the level system sits a component that is not about power at all, and it gets three separate justifications. The psalm is a very important aspect in each incantation. The instruction: the Wizard must recite it several times before attempting to cast an incantation.
First, psalms are undoubtedly and irrefutably the incarnate word of God — therefore the entire universe stands and listens whenever a psalm is recited. Second, they were written with powerful Kabbalistic formulas, so they hold the power of the Eternal in their very structure, with an innate connection with the spheres of the planets, the celestials, and the very spiritual letters that make up the matrix of reality. Third, and this one is different in kind: the psalms had been recited so many times, by so many believers, that they had been irradiated with the power and faith of those which recited them in the past — which assures confidence and the firm belief that their effect will come to be. Read the third reason carefully. It is not a claim about God or about Kabbalah. It is a claim about accumulated use — a text becomes powerful because many people have said it, and what accumulates is other people's faith.
That is the only place in this material where power is described as building up in something through repetition by strangers. Everything else charges by consecration, by planetary radiation or by the practitioner's own attendance. A psalm charges by being popular.
Put the two mechanisms side by side, because a practitioner has to choose between them. The assistance route raises what you can cast. Acquire a familiar out of your own life force, then angels, then elementals, and your sphere can exert more. This is slow, gated, and explicitly out of reach for now.
The psalm route is available today. Recite the psalm several times before casting, and you get the universe's attention, a Kabbalistically structured text, and the accumulated confidence of everyone who ever said it. One raises your ceiling and the other improves this evening's casting. And only the second is actually taught.
What a reader can act on now. Check the level of any incantation you intend to cast. If it is above the second level, you do not yet have the assistances the level assumes.
Stay at levels one and two. That is the stated range for a practitioner without a familiar, and the reason is not caution but arithmetic — the sphere has to exert power it does not yet have. Recite the psalm several times first. Before every casting, not once at the start of a practice. It is described as a component of the incantation rather than as preparation for it.
Build the sphere, because the cosmological and cosmogonic constructs are the only power source available to you until the assistance rituals arrive. And understand what the ladder above you costs. The first rung is a familiar made from your own life force, and the angels and elementals come only after one has been acquired and kept.
The level system, the three classes of assistance and the psalm reasons are asserted with no tradition named and nothing quoted. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.
Familiar spirits are a real feature of European witchcraft records and grimoire practice, usually as animal-formed helpers. 🚩 Genuicaveri has no traceable source and is this system's own coinage, built like the Archprime names. ⚠ A familiar is said to be created with the wizard's own life force, and nothing anywhere addresses the cost of that, whether it is permanent, or whether it can be recovered. In a system whose energy doctrine is otherwise strict about transfer and accounting, this is the one uncosted expenditure.

Unresolved: nothing states how a familiar is kept, though keeping is named as separate from acquiring and is the gate on everything above it.
Follow the assistance economy and magical power is social. A wizard's ceiling is set by how many beings have agreed to stand beside them, and casting higher means recruiting rather than training. Follow the sphere doctrine and magical power is architectural. The eight rings, the virtues charging three of them, the universe charging four, the Esophoros gearing them together — all of it internal, all of it built by study and conduct, none of it requiring anybody else.
Both are given as sources of the same output, and the level system adds them together. But they demand different lives: one is years alone with a construction in your mind, and the other is a household of spirits acquired at the cost of your own life force.
Feeding Discarnate Spirits and the Fake Priest — Both traditions describe a practitioner accumulating non-human helpers and both treat that accumulation as the real measure of what they can do. In each, an unassisted operator is limited in a way no amount of personal effort corrects. The African material is explicit about the ongoing cost. Discarnate spirits must be fed, and a practitioner who takes on entities takes on an obligation that continues — which is why the fake priest is a danger rather than merely a fraud: the relationship has upkeep, and someone who does not understand that will not maintain it.
Here the cost is charged once, at the front, out of the practitioner's own life force — and neither corpus notices what that hides. A Genuicaveri is created with the very life force of the Wizard, and after that the material says only that it must be kept, without saying what keeping consists of. A tradition that names the feeding gives its practitioners a way to notice neglect. One that names a single creation cost and an unspecified upkeep gives them a familiar they can lose without ever learning how.
Sharpest implication. Spell level is not difficulty. It is the amount of power the Philosophical Sphere should exert, and that power comes from the magical assistances the Wizard has acquired — so a practitioner working alone is capped at levels one and two, and the way up is not practice but recruitment.
