The Ten Fingers as a Planetary Keyboard

How Do You Address a Planet Without Saying Anything?

Every other operation here needs equipment. A wand, a consecrated censer, eight stones in a circle, a formula said out loud in a room with nobody else in it. This one needs two fingers.

Each of the fingers represents a planet and a Sephira — and by knowing which finger belongs to which, a practitioner can command the planetary forces, intelligences and spirits by employing a sacred gesture. The gesture itself is one movement: place together the thumb, which is the will in either hand, and the other finger representing the planet you want to address.1 Thumb to index. Thumb to ring finger. That is the whole technique, and it works anywhere, in front of anyone, without a word.

Ten Is One, an Octave Up

The number arrives with a musical argument behind it. Ten is the return to the vibration of the number One, but in a higher octave — and octaves are explained: tones which go from the graver and denser to the more subtle and sublime, exactly as the levels of reality do.2 So ten is not one plus nine. It is the same note, played higher, existing on a higher level, on an entirely different universe.

What changes at the higher octave is authority. One is the Will; ten is the Will accompanied with a whole new ability to rule reality in a given space. Ten is called the ruler and the projection of a kingdom, the ability to self-govern, and the ability to provide rulership to others — and the difference between those last two is stated rather than assumed. To be able to self-govern is one thing; to project enough willpower so that others feel compelled to obey and follow suit is another thing entirely.

The result is described as a space rather than a power: ten creates a sphere of activity in which both ruler and ruled co-exist in perfect harmony.

Kether and Malkuth Bend the Tree

The Kabbalistic derivation is short and it explains where the Philosophical Sphere comes from. Kether represents the 01 and Malkuth represents 10 — the same two digits in reverse order, which makes them a Tension, or mirror image numbers. And when they combine, they bend the Tree of Life into a circle and eventually into a sphere.

That circle is the point. By creating it, Crown and Kingdom create the space, or rather kingdom, where the will of the Wizard will manifest and show forth. Which makes ten the creator of the sphere in the mental state — it gives the sphere form on a magical state of knowledge and thought, and manifests that reality on a higher octave than the physical one.

Hence the claim that follows, which is the strongest thing said anywhere about the sphere: this is why the Philosophical Sphere is considered to be a magical reality, more present and sound than physicality in itself. More present than the physical world. Not a model of it, and not a private aid.

The Two Hands

The finger table splits the Tree down the middle, one hand per side.3 On the right hand: thumb is Uranus / Kether, index is Saturn / Chockmah, middle is Jupiter / Chesed, ring is the Sun / Tiphareth, and the little finger is Venus / Netzach.

On the left hand: thumb is Earth / Malkuth, index is the Moon / Yesod, middle is Mercury / Hod, ring is Mars / Geburah, and the little finger is Neptune / Binah. Look at how that falls. The right hand carries Kether, Chockmah, Chesed, Tiphareth and Netzach — the Crown, the top of the Pillar of Mercy, and the centre. The left carries Malkuth, Yesod, Hod, Geburah and Binah — the Kingdom and the Pillar of Severity. So the merciful side of the Tree is on your right hand and the severe side on your left, which is the same handedness the altar rule assumes when it forbids approaching from the left.

It also means every sephira has a finger. A practitioner with two hands is carrying the entire Tree, and the gesture is a way of touching one station of it.

Analytical Case Study — The Thumb Problem

Now the difficulty, and it is a real one rather than a quibble. The technique says the thumb is the will in either hand, and that you touch it to whichever finger carries the planet you want. That makes the thumb a constant — the operator's own will, applied to a target.

But the table gives both thumbs a planet and a sephira of their own. The right thumb is Uranus / Kether; the left thumb is Earth / Malkuth. So the two fingers that are supposed to be you are also two of the ten stations.

⚠ Both readings are present and neither is reconciled. If the thumb is only the will, then Kether and Malkuth have no finger and the keyboard covers eight sephiroth, not ten. If the thumbs are Kether and Malkuth, then addressing either one requires touching a thumb to itself.

There is a reading on which this is deliberate rather than sloppy, and it is worth stating because the rest of the system supports it. Kether and Malkuth are exactly the two sephiroth that stop being stations when the Tree bends — they combine and become the outer layer-surface of the sphere. They are the pair that is everywhere rather than somewhere. A thumb that is present in every single gesture and belongs to no gesture in particular behaves the same way. Whether that was intended is not stated anywhere, and it is offered here as a reading rather than as the answer.

Ten Planets, Ten Archangels

The ten planets include the three transuranic ones — Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — which weren't known in earlier periods. They can be worked as a network, because they exist in perfect balance in the solar system, and that balance is what gets invoked into a wizard's life. Each has a governing archangel: Uranus–Metatron, Saturn–Raziel, Neptune–Tzaphkiel, Jupiter–Tzadkiel, Mars–Camael, the Sun–Michael, Venus–Haniel, Mercury–Raphael, the Moon–Gabriel, and Pluto–the Spirit of the Shekinah.4

The powers listed for the network are enormous: Creation, power over life and death, omniscience, abundance, happiness, justice and strength, plus Celestial Visions and Communion with the Greatness of Heaven, power over conflicts, victory and nature, over magic and communication, over the subtle worlds, and over the people of the land. And then a gate, which is unusual for this material — the powers are not simply available. Only the most pious and good will ever be able to share these planetary forces, and they are not readily given to every Wizard. They come through constant practice, constant vigilance of oneself, and as a result of the most dedicated mind and untroubled heart, and they are conferred by the Superior Forces of Heaven only once those forces are satisfied the wizard has come to apprehend the amazing responsibilities that come with them.

Parchment at Tiphareth

The ten-object grid has the most specific construction of any in this section, and one instruction that appears nowhere else. Use ten spherical stones of the same material and size — the only grid where shape and matching are specified. Enchant it with a Magicartifex Ubertas incantation, stating the desire to use the grid as a magical device to harness the power of Ten. So enchanted, it connects a practitioner with the higher forces of the heavens, the archangels, the planets and the attributes of the Holy Sephiroth.

Then the operation. Place your desire upon a piece of parchment, and put that parchment in the position of Tiphareth. In that position the desire will be infused with the power of the other Sephiroth — and then the condition: if the desire is propitious it will come to be.

Two things there are worth holding. The grid is a Tree, not a ring — the stones occupy sephirotic positions, which is why the parchment has a position rather than a centre. And the wish is not granted; it is infused, and only a propitious one arrives. That is the closest this material comes to saying a request can be refused on its merits.

Implementation Workflow — Playing the Keyboard

Two practices, one portable and one built. The gesture. Decide which planet you are addressing. Find its finger: right hand for Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, the Sun and Venus; left hand for Earth, the Moon, Mercury, Mars and Neptune. Then press your thumb to that finger and hold the planetary force, intelligence or spirit in mind as you do. Nothing is said aloud, nothing is drawn, and nobody watching will know.

The grid. Ten spherical stones, same material, same size, laid out in the positions of the Tree. Enchant it with Magicartifex Ubertas while stating plainly that it is to harness the power of Ten. Write your desire on parchment and lay it at Tiphareth. Then leave it — the surrounding sephiroth do the infusing, and only a propitious wish comes through.

And the standing condition. The planetary network's powers are not issued on request. They follow constant practice, constant self-vigilance, a dedicated mind and an untroubled heart — and they arrive when the Superior Forces judge that the responsibility has been understood.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The finger table, the octave argument and the grid procedure are asserted with no tradition named and nothing quoted. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.

The Kabbalistic frame is standard where it can be checked — Kether and Malkuth as first and tenth, the ten sephiroth with the attributes given, and the mirror relation between 01 and 10 as a numeric observation. 🚩 The archangel-to-planet assignments diverge from the common modern set. Tzaphkiel is usually given to Binah and Saturn, and Raziel to Chockmah; here Saturn takes Raziel and Neptune takes Tzaphkiel. Reported as printed rather than corrected.

⚠ The thumb is defined twice and the two definitions conflict — as the will in either hand, and as Uranus/Kether and Earth/Malkuth. Reported unresolved above. ⚠ Earth appears on the left thumb and Pluto does not appear on any finger, although Pluto is counted among the ten planets and given an archangel. The ten fingers and the ten planets are therefore not the same ten. The finger table is printed in two columns and this edition's conversion runs them together; the pairings above are matched by column order. Re-check the plate.

Unresolved: nothing states whether the gesture needs the sphere already built, or whether an apprentice can use it from the first week.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow the gesture and the planets are available. Ten fingers, a thumb, and a moment's attention — a practitioner can address Mars on a bus. Nothing about it requires equipment, consecration, privacy or preparation.

Follow the network passage and the planets are earned. Their powers are not readily given to every Wizard, they require constant practice and constant vigilance of oneself, and they are conferred by the Superior Forces of Heaven once a wizard is judged to understand the responsibility. Both are in the same section. And they answer differently for a beginner who presses thumb to ring finger on the first afternoon. On the first reading, they have addressed Mars. On the second, they have made a shape with their hand.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Abhaya Mudra: The Gesture of Fearlessness — Both traditions hold that a hand held in a particular configuration is an operation rather than a sign, and in both the specific arrangement of the fingers is what carries the content. Neither treats the gesture as illustration.

They differ in which way the gesture points. Abhaya mudra is a transmission: the raised palm with fingers extended sends fearlessness-consciousness from the one making the gesture to those who receive it, so it is aimed outward, at people, and made where it can be seen.

Here the gesture is a dial rather than a broadcast, and neither corpus notices what that costs. Thumb to finger addresses a planetary intelligence, silently, alone, with nobody meant to be watching. Which removes the only check the other gesture has. A transmitting mudra can be observed working — the room changes, or it does not. A dialling gesture confirms nothing to anyone, including the person making it, which is precisely why this system can leave the thumb defined two contradictory ways and still present the technique as complete. Nothing in the practice would ever surface the error.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The whole Tree fits on two hands, split by side: Mercy and the Crown on the right, Severity and the Kingdom on the left. So a practitioner is never without the instrument, and addressing a planetary intelligence costs one movement that nobody else in the room can see.

Generative questions.

  • The thumb is the will and also two sephiroth. Is that a fault, or the same disappearing act Kether and Malkuth perform when the Tree bends into a sphere?
  • Ten planets get archangels and only nine get fingers, with Earth standing where Pluto should. Which list is the real ten?
  • The parchment at Tiphareth arrives only if the desire is propitious. Who decides, and does the practitioner ever find out which way it went?
