A project that will not start. A conversation that has gone flat. A room that feels dead. There is an operation for exactly that condition here, and it is a triangle drawn in the air.
The number three is used to provide animation and movement to stagnant things, and to call into being a much necessary thing or event that so far hasn't been manifested in a wizard's life.1 The reason given comes from the Kabbalah: three is the channel for all the waters of the universe — a fiery and spiritual water that charges the creatures of the universe with divine intent and keeps them filled with its magnificence. So three is what gets things moving. And underneath that use sits a claim about how anything new arrives at all.
The number is first tied to the Trinity, and immediately widened past the Christian one. The idea of a divine trinity is older than those imparted by the Christian tenets, and here it names the origin of the universe and the first being to exist within it. That first being was composed of three primary substances: Animation, Dynamism and Mind.
Those are the same three that turn up as Anima, Spirit and Mind in the weapons material, where they collapse into a fourth that is a sound. Here they are the constituents of the first thing that ever existed — so the number three is not a quantity applied to the world afterwards. It is what the world's first inhabitant was made of.
Then the claim the whole page turns on, and it is stated without hedging. Three is a representation of the birth of a new form from the intervention of two previous ones. It is called the blessed action of synthesis, and it lets a wizard join two things and by this union create another — entirely independent from the previous two.
Read that last clause carefully, because it is doing something unusual. The third is not a compromise between its parents, not a blend of them, not a container holding both. It is independent. Once it exists, the two things that made it are no longer part of it.
Geometrically the same point is made another way. Three is the first plane by the interaction of three points — two points only ever give you a line, and a line has no surface to put anything on. So three is where there is room for the first time, and the shape it makes is a triangle.
The triangle is then loaded with three meanings: the elements combined, the divine energy encased in a physical form, and the Lesser Light — a term defined as the natural fires of the alchemists, the fire from the stars, the fire from the sun, and the combination of mind, will and devotion found in mankind.2 It is also called a symbol for the sacred fire of transmutation: the power to change things, and the ability to push reality to the sides to bring about the intended will of the wizard.
The worked example given for a three-object grid is startlingly practical, and it is worth reading exactly as printed. Create a grid of three objects which represent archetypes present in the Wizard's life. Then the example: one object can represent one's boss, and in this case it will be the Father; the second is Fortune; the third is the Magus. And the promised result: this will manifest riches untold if properly worked and visualized.
Look at what has happened to the boss. A real person, with a name and an office, has been converted into an archetype — the Father — and then set beside two figures who are not people at all. Fortune and the Magus are pure archetype; the boss is a colleague you saw on Tuesday. The grid treats all three as the same kind of thing.
Which is what makes it a synthesis rather than a petition. The operation is not asking the boss for a raise or asking Fortune for luck. It is putting three archetypes into one triangle so that a fourth thing — the riches — comes out, entirely independent of the previous ones. The boss is a component, not an addressee.
And the two conditions attached carry the weight: if properly worked and visualized. No count, no duration, no incantation is given for this one. The whole procedure is three objects, correctly identified, and held in the mind.
The simplest use of the number needs no altar at all. A wizard can carry three stones to represent the presence of the divine and as such be protected. The mechanism given is not that the stones are lucky: the protection stems from the universal fact that the three stones represent the Ultimate Divine, Magic and Activity, and those cosmogonical qualities are enough to stop the forces of evil and chaos in their tracks.
Three stones, one each for the divine, for magic, and for activity. Carried, not placed. It is the only protective device in this whole practical section that fits in a coat pocket and requires nothing said over it.
Note also what the three stand for. Not father, son and spirit; not body, mind and soul. The Ultimate Divine, Magic and Activity — which is this system's own cosmological triple, the same one that puts Magic second in the order of things that exist.
The animation technique is a gesture, and it has two forms depending on whether the target is physical. To imbue something with animation, the wizard invokes the power of Three by drawing a Triangle over the desired object — or traces the Triangle in the air if it is a concept or notion.
That distinction is the useful part. A stalled business, a friendship that has gone quiet, a piece of work that will not start: none of these is an object you can draw on. The instruction covers them by putting the triangle in the air where the concept is being held in mind, which is consistent with everything else here — the wand's traced sigils are drawn in the subtler levels of reality rather than in the air itself, and this is the same move at beginner scale.
The planetary assignment looks wrong at first, and that objection is raised here before a reader can raise it. Three belongs to Neptune, and Neptune is far from being fiery and spiritual — it rules the unconscious world, the unconscious mind, and the realm of dreams and fantasies, along with natural abundance, the extremes and experiences. Its secretive and initiatic nature hides its inner representations.
Then the pairing that explains the choice. Neptune is called another master and teacher like Saturn: both prove us against our weaknesses. Saturn tests through time and endings. Neptune tests through fantasies, illusions and deluded thoughts — and here is the operative sentence: it is sometimes these fantasies, illusions and deluded thoughts that prevent us from achieving new manifestations in the world and inhibit us from transmuting our surroundings.
So the planet of daydreams governs the number of getting things started, because daydreaming is the specific thing that stops them. The number that animates stagnant things is ruled by the planet that produces stagnation.
Three techniques, in ascending order of ambition. Carry three stones for general protection. One for the Ultimate Divine, one for Magic, one for Activity. Nothing is said over them and nothing is placed; you simply have them on you.
Trace a triangle over anything that has stalled. If it is a physical object, draw the triangle over it. If it is a situation, a project or an idea, trace the triangle in the air while holding the thing in mind. This is the animation technique, and it is the one to reach for when something should have started and has not.
Build a three-object grid when you want a synthesis rather than a nudge. Identify three archetypes actually present in your life — a person in your life converted to the archetype they occupy, plus two figures such as Fortune and the Magus. Place the three objects, and then work and visualise them properly, which is the whole of the stated method.
And keep the mechanism in view while you do any of it. Two things joined produce a third that is independent of both — so what a three-operation delivers is not a better version of what you put in. It is something new, and the components do not survive in it.
The synthesis claim, the triangle technique and the archetype grid are asserted with no tradition named beyond a general reference to the Kabbalah. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.
The claim that trinities predate Christian doctrine is historically sound and uncontroversial. 🚩 The specific triple Animation, Dynamism and Mind as the substances of the first being is this system's own, and matches its Anima–Spirit–Mind scheme rather than any external source. 🚩 The Neptune attribution is a modern assignment — Neptune was discovered in 1846 — and it is presented here alongside Kabbalistic material of much greater age with no note that the two belong to different periods.
⚠ The archetype grid is the only technique in this section with a promised outcome and no procedure. "Riches untold if properly worked and visualized" states a result and a condition, and defines neither properly worked nor how long for. Unresolved: if the third thing is entirely independent of the two that made it, nothing says how a practitioner would recognise a genuine synthesis from an unrelated new arrival.
Follow the synthesis account and three is generative. Join two things, get a third that owes nothing to either, and the world has one more thing in it than it did. The triangle is the sacred fire of transmutation, pushing reality aside to make room for what the wizard intends.
Follow the Neptune account and three is a test. The planet that governs the number rules fantasies, illusions and deluded thoughts — and those are named as exactly what stops new things manifesting. On that reading the number's own ruler is the obstacle the number exists to get past.
Both are on the same page, and they leave a practitioner without a way to tell the two apart. A synthesis that has arrived and a fantasy about a synthesis both feel like something new in the mind, and this is the one number whose planet specialises in making the second look like the first.
The Transcendent Function — Both traditions hold that a genuinely new third thing can come out of two that will not reconcile, and both treat that as the central creative act rather than as a lucky outcome. In each, the pair is the raw material and the third is the point. The difference is what happens to the parents. In the depth-psychological account the third transcends and includes both poles — a person can be vulnerable and strong at once, and the new thing holds the contradiction rather than settling it. The opposites stay inside the result, which is why the work is slow and why holding the tension without collapsing into one side is the whole discipline.
Here the third is entirely independent of the previous two, and neither corpus notices what that changes. If the parents survive inside the third, the synthesis can be checked — you can look for them, and a false one gives itself away by having dropped a pole. If the third owes nothing to either, there is nothing to check it against. That is precisely why one tradition can offer a triangle traced over an object as a complete method while the other offers no method at all, only a capacity to be developed: a manufacture needs a procedure, and an emergence needs a person who can stand the wait.
Sharpest implication. The third thing is entirely independent from the previous two. Join two things here and you do not get a blend, a compromise or a container — you get something that no longer contains its parents, which means a completed synthesis leaves nothing behind to verify it by.
Generative questions.
