Numbers as Broadcast Devices

You Cannot Find a Five

Go looking for the number five. Not five apples, not the digit written on a page — five itself. A person could look for it for thousands of years and never get close to finding it.1 It is not somewhere, and no scholar has ever turned one up.

That is the problem this section opens with, and the answer given is not that numbers are therefore only ideas. Five exists, as all numbers do, as a reflection of our understanding of space and matter — a concept apprehended by the mind and then related to the senses. Then the move that makes it operative. A person can count five things as an amount, but these are not Five; they are an expression of its wonder. And here is the sentence the whole practice hangs on: those objects react with the universe as Five would react, because these objects had been infused with the quality of Five.

How a Number Gets Into an Object

Take that literally and something ordinary becomes strange. Put five stones on a table and you have not merely counted to five. You have made five objects behave, toward the rest of the universe, the way the number five behaves.

There is a history behind it. The ancient ones knew each number had a particular quality, affinity and correspondence with the natural and supernatural worlds. They knew those virtues were impregnated upon objects in the physical world, so an object could be used according to whichever number it carried. The Kabbalists knew it too, which is offered as the reason their alphabet letters carry numerical values.

Then a line about rank that is easy to read past. Numbers are so abstract and perfect that they exist before deities were even born — because numbers define deities and give them their attributes. In a system with a First God, an ordered heaven and named archangels, the numbers sit above all of it. Not as things a god made, but as what a god is described by.

Two practical consequences follow. Quantities matter and you have to know them: how many gemstones on the altar for healing, how many times an incantation is repeated before it manifests, why make three signs of the cross and not five or even ten. And numbers can be used to build simple grids and magical circuits, which is where this becomes a technique.

Grids

The plainest procedure in the whole curriculum is one sentence long: place a particular amount of similar objects in a specific geometric shape. Usually that shape is a circle. With experience a wizard can use triangles, squares, pentagrams, hexagrams and more complex forms.

Any grid is composed of any number of objects, and the number of objects represents that number. That number then imbues the grid with its own power and attributes, and the grid broadcast these emanations into the physical and magical world.

So the word to hold is broadcast. A grid is not a container, a store or a lens. It is a transmitter, and the thing it transmits is whatever number you built it out of. Seven stones in a circle put seven into the room.

The applications listed are broad: protection, energy, defence, learning, spirituality. The placement is domestic — grids go on the altar or in the meditation room. They are powered by a Magicartifex Ubertas incantation and by the Exorcism of the Forms.

Analytical Case Study — The Ladder of Doubles

The most substantial thing in the numbers material is not a technique. It is a ladder, and it is stated once.

Master Numbers are the number combination of the same digits: 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88 and 99. They exist in the border of perfection for each definite layer of consciousness. And here is why they behave differently from everything else: they have no numeric tension, and as such they are single entities outside from the duality of the Universe.

Then each is given a stage, and read in order they describe a career.

Eleven is the union of One and Ten. It gives complete understanding of the material world and allows passage into other realms — but only after the self has accomplished its mission upon the world of matter, which is to self-define and find its purpose. Twenty-two is the wisdom and knowledge obtained and understood, pure reason. By then the wizard has communicated with beings, archangels, deities and masters. Thirty-three is becoming the messenger of the gods: attuned to the forces of light, and now a champion who guides others toward enlightenment through subtlety and very discreet ways.

Forty-four kindles the Inner Flame of Magical Power, also called the Wheel of Immovability. There the wizard is entrusted with the care and protection of the Throne of Perfection. Fifty-five is the sum of the first ten digits. It grants the ability to manipulate the previous worlds, and at the same time the duty to keep the balance of the universe by not operating in these universes — a power and an instruction not to use it, in one sentence.

Sixty-six is where it turns severe. It is the state in which the wizard gives life to the inanimate and takes life from the animate — named as a large responsibility, requiring wisdom, moral values and a high spiritual mind. Seventy-seven is the Guardian of the Universe, where the wizard is a Sword of Heaven, ready to strike against the forces of evil. Eighty-eight is absolute perfection and universal equilibrium, and the wizard is known there by a lost initiatic omnipotent name.

Ninety-nine is godhood. Those who attain maximum knowledge and wisdom are regarded as gods, known as the divine rays and almighty gods of nature. And the ladder closes with a warning rather than an invitation: the Apprentice better pay attention not to crave such prize, otherwise it will never come his or her way.

Nine rungs, from finishing your business in the material world to being regarded as a god, given in a section nominally about arithmetic. Nothing states how a person moves from one to the next, and nothing states how they would know which one they are on.

Why Master Numbers Must Never Be Gridded

The ladder ends in a prohibition, and it is absolute.

Master Numbers should never be employed in a grid. The reason given is not danger from outside but overload. These arrangements are so powerful, infinite in their expressions and so sublime that a grid would rather hamper the Wizard instead of helping him or her.

Follow the mechanism and it makes sense on its own terms. A grid works by numeric tension — the number's own internal relations are what it emits. A Master Number has no numeric tension and stands outside the duality of the universe, so there is nothing for a grid to broadcast. Eleven stones in a circle would not transmit eleven. They would transmit something with no relations in it at all.

Which quietly forbids some very ordinary arrangements. Eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three are not exotic quantities, and a practitioner who has not read this far might set out twenty-two crystals for a working and think they were being generous.

Stacking Two Digits

For every other number above ten there is a construction rule, and it comes with a caution about the practitioner rather than the material. The apprentice is not suggested to employ grids for higher combination numbers than Ten, and the reason is stated plainly: they are too complex at this stage. Before trying, study each combination's qualities and virtues. Be completely sure you know the combination by heart.

Then the method. Build a separate grid for each digit and enchant each as before. The number thirty-five is called upon by employing the grid of Three and the grid of Five. And then the arrangement rule, which is a hard one: put the first digit above and the second digit below, never in a side by side configuration. The reason given is confusion, in both directions: a side-by-side arrangement would confuse the forces, and worse, it would confuse the wizard. Three above five is thirty-five. Three beside five is two grids, or fifteen, or something nobody can name — and you are, in the material's own words, working with powerful forces.

The Zero You Are Not Given Yet

One figure is deliberately withheld, and the refusal is explicit.

Up to this moment we haven't ventured into the realm of the zero, and we shall not do so at this time. The reason: the zero is a figure of Initiation and must be taken with great care and respect, and it is said that through the revelation of this figure the Great Wizards of the past acquired their powers and their responsibilities. More than a mathematical construct, zero is a state of being.

What the apprentice gets instead is homework with no answer attached. Ponder its virtues: its capacity for neutrality, its quality of not being there, its feature of invalidating or multiplying things, and its attribute of keeping the balance between positive and negative. Then: from there on Light shall guide you. That is the pattern wherever something is withheld here: a topic named, its properties listed, and the instruction to work it out yourself. A smaller version sits a few paragraphs earlier. The union of one and two is said to give the diagram of the universe, starting from the numerical tension of 12-21=33 — and then: nothing more can be said about this.

Implementation Workflow — Building a Grid

The whole procedure, with the constraints that bind it. Decide what the grid is for — protection, energy, defence, learning, spirituality — and pick the number whose qualities match. That means knowing the number first; everything here depends on the correspondences rather than on the arrangement.

Take that many similar objects and lay them out in a geometric shape. A circle is the default and the one to start with; triangles, squares, pentagrams and hexagrams come with experience. The count is the number, so an object more or less is a different grid.

Put it on the altar or in the meditation room — somewhere it stays and somewhere you are. Power it with a Magicartifex Ubertas incantation. Then perform the Exorcism of the Forms over it, with a consecrated wand in the right hand and the left hand pointing upwards. That formula brings order and light into any figure drawn or worked, and it opens EXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA FORMATA NUMERALIS, PER PENTAGRAMMATON ET IN NOMINE TETRAGRAMMATON.2

For a two-digit number, build a grid per digit and stack them — first digit above, second below, never side by side. And do not build one at all above ten until you know that number combination by heart. Never grid a Master Number: not 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88 or 99.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

The grid mechanism, the Master Number ladder and the stacking rule are asserted with no tradition named and nothing quoted. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.

The claim that Kabbalists assign numerical values to letters is accurate and uncontroversial. 🚩 The nine-stage Master Number ladder resembles no numerological scheme this build has been able to check, and master numbers in mainstream numerology are usually only 11, 22 and sometimes 33. The extension to 99 and the stage content are reported as this system's own.

The Exorcism of the Forms is the thirteenth instance of a shared formula frameEXORCISO IGITUR TE CREATURA [X], PER PENTAGRAMMATON ET IN NOMINE TETRAGRAMMATON — with only the substance-noun swapped. Here the noun is formata numeralis. Treated as a template rather than as a unique formula.

Unresolved: nothing states how a wizard advances from one Master Number stage to the next, or how they would recognise which stage they occupy. The ladder is given as a description and never as a path.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Follow the infusion account and quantity is destiny. Five objects are not five things; they carry the quality of Five and react with the universe accordingly. So every count in every operation is active whether or not anyone chose it, and a careless handful of stones on an altar is broadcasting something. Follow the grid instructions and quantity is a deliberate choice made by a trained person. Study the number, know its virtues, lay the objects in a shape, enchant them, and never attempt a combination you do not know by heart. On that account a number only does anything once somebody competent has selected it.

Both are in the same section. And they disagree about the untrained practitioner's kitchen table, where objects sit in counts nobody picked. On the first reading the room is full of grids. On the second there are none, because none were built.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Afa, Geomancy, Binary Code — Both traditions put number underneath everything else rather than on top of it as a description, and both build a working practice directly on that. In each, a pattern of a definite count is the thing being handled.

The direction of travel is opposite. In Afa the dibia casts palm nuts, gets a sixteen-position pattern of open and closed positions, and reads it — the number arrives from the throw, and the practitioner's skill lies in interpreting an address they did not choose.

Here the number is chosen by the operator and emitted, and neither corpus notices what that costs. A grid broadcasts whatever count you built it from. Which means a grid cannot tell you anything. A cast pattern can surprise you, and being surprised is the whole reason to cast; a grid returns exactly the quality you decided to transmit, and no arrangement of seven stones will ever inform you that the answer was three. That is precisely why this system needs a separate cabinet of crystal balls, censers and water vases for finding things out. The number practice here is a transmitter, and every receiver in the tradition is a different device.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. A grid is a transmitter, not a container. The amount of objects in the grid will represent that particular number, and the grid then broadcasts these emanations into the world — so the count is the signal, and adding one stone changes what the room is saying.

Generative questions.

  • Master Numbers have no numeric tension and cannot be gridded. Is numeric tension what every other grid is actually emitting?
  • Numbers are said to exist before deities and to define them. Does that make the number practice more fundamental than the invocations, or simply older?
  • The zero is withheld as a figure of Initiation. Is it withheld because a reader could not use it, or because using it changes what they are?
